Erqi Memorial Tower
Erqi Memorial Tower, located in Erqi Square, was built for the workers’ strike of Jinghan (Beijing to Wuhan) Railway Workers on February 7th in 1923.
In 1923 a workers' strike began in Zhengzhou and spread along the rail line area, but it was severely suppressed by Nationalist Army of the warlords supported by Japan, with the leaders of the strike killed. But the workers didn’t give up and continued to struggle with the Nationalist Army, winning the strike at last. So a 14-story double tower was built in the center of Zhengzhou city in order to commemorate the strike in 1951.
The tower was constructed by armored concrete structure with 63 (206 feet) meters high and 14 floors, among which 3 bottom floors are the base and 11 floors are the tower body. With the nickname of the Twin Tower, it is composed of two connected pentagonal towers.
The tower is unique and grandeur with a novel style in design and it has the traditional characteristics of Chinese architecture, which has the eaves on each floor archaized with rising tips as well as the roofs covered with green glazing tiles. On the top of the tower is a Bell Tower with a diameter of 2.7 meters (3 yards), with 6 clocks around on each face of the tower, playing the songs that can be heard from far way. The ichnography of the tower is composed of two connecting pentagon towers. Seen from different perspectives, the tower takes different shapes. For example, seen from the west or east directions, it is just a single tower; however, seen from the south or north directions, it is like a twin-tower. There are 10 halls in the body of the tower and one underground hall, displaying all kinds of historical relics, pictures and texts about the strike. Inside the tower are a winding stair and exhibition halls on each side, and the visitors can climb the winding tower to the top of the tower, getting panorama of Zhengzhou City.
Now it is not only a site for revolution education, but also it is a symbol of Zhengzhou City, with modern buildings and shopping malls around it.
