Before the People’s Republic of China was founded, Zhengzhou was called a “city of sand” due to harsh environment. After years of landscaping construction, in 1985, Zhengzhou won the honorable title of “Green City” for its leading ranking among large and medium-sized cities in China in term of green coverage ratio published by the State Council.

In recent years, to strive for higher green coverage, higher quality and higher grade, an overall greening project is planned and implemented, that is, expanding existing green space through replacing illegal buildings with greening space and increasing green in every usable room. Furthermore, pocket parks, micro-landscape and street gardens have been constructed, and walls of all parks demolished to share the green in a bid to enhance quality of greenery landscape of the city. Zhengzhou fully utilizes the road side belt to implement its city beautification and colorizing plan. The ecological environment in Zhengzhou is getting better every day, and birds that were rarely seen in the past have taken a fancy to Zhengzhou and settle down here to live and breed. Swans are the most representative one. In recent years, swans have been observed in North Dragon Lake for many times. In the past, they just took a break here for two or three days during migration journey before moving on for their destination. This year, four mute swans have been living here for a month. Zhengzhou with beautiful environment and friendly people may become their favored habitat.
生态环境一天比一天更好，一些过去很难见到的鸟儿也喜欢上郑州，在郑州安家落户，繁衍生息。天鹅就是最有代表性的鸟儿，这几年，已多次观测到有天鹅在郑州北龙湖活动，但过去这里只是他们南北迁徙的歇脚地，停留个三两天继续上路。今年有4只疣鼻天鹅已在此生活一个月时间，环境优美、人类友好的郑州也许将成为它们的定居之地。
At present, Zhengzhou has a forest area of 184,120.78 hectares, with an average annual increase of 110,000 mu and a forest coverage rate of 34.5%; it has built 385 large and medium-sized forest (wetland) parks and urban parks at different levels, and the urban green coverage has reached 40.8%.

The Jialu River, which has a history of more than 2,000 years, was named after the irrigationist Jia Lu who harnessed the river in the Yuan Dynasty. This year, the comprehensive ecological restoration project for the Jialu River will be fully completed, and the Jialu River with a new look ushers in its first spring.
有着2000多年历史的贾鲁河，因元朝的水利专家贾鲁治理河道而得名。今年，贾鲁河综合治理生态修复工程将全面建成，旧貌换新颜的贾鲁河迎来了它的第一个春天。
